WordPress is worth using because the software is free, you own your site, it gives SEO a solid base, and its plugins cover needs like online payments and Urdu content. The catch is that you still pay for hosting and upkeep, and plugin quality decides how safe your site is. For most Pakistani business sites, that trade is worth it.

What Is WordPress? (And Which One Do You Mean?)

There are two products with the same name, and mixing them up is the most common beginner mistake.

When people say “use WordPress for your website,” they almost always mean WordPress.org. That’s what this guide covers.

WordPress by the Numbers in 2026

Numbers show you where the platform stands today. Be careful with older articles: many still quote figures from 2020 or 2021.

  • Share of all websites: W3Techs’ own page showed WordPress used by 41.9% of all websites on 22 May 2026.
  • Share among CMS-powered sites: trackers put it at roughly 59.8% of sites with a known CMS, far ahead of Shopify and Wix. That is about six in ten.
  • Trend: one roundup notes a small dip in early 2026, the first noticeable decline after years of growth. WordPress is still the leader, but not growing without limit.
  • Plugins: the official directory lists more than 59,600 free plugins, per Avada’s 2024 count.

Exact percentages differ slightly between trackers, so treat these as “about 42%” rather than a precise figure.

Reason 1: The Software Is Free, but What Does a Site Really Cost in Pakistan?

Yes, WordPress costs nothing to download. But “free” doesn’t mean “no budget.”

You pay for the things around it:

Cost itemTypical range in PakistanSource note

Treat the development prices as one agency’s range, not a market standard. Always get two or three quotes, and ask what is included: design, content, SEO setup, training and support.

The catch: the cheapest hosting can make a site slow.
The fix: start small, but choose a host with good support and daily backups. Upgrade when traffic grows.

Reason 2: You Own Your Website, With No Lock-In

On many website builders, you rent your site. Stop paying, or the platform changes its rules, and you can lose your design and your setup.

WordPress.org works differently. The software is open source, and the site you build belongs to you. You can move to another host, hire a different developer, or change the design without starting over.

The software is released under an open-source license. Its trademark is held by a non-profit, the WordPress Foundation, whose purpose is to keep WordPress freely available.

Three practical benefits:

  • You choose your host and can switch later.
  • You keep your content and files.
  • You aren’t tied to one company’s pricing.

The catch: ownership also means responsibility. Nobody updates or backs up your site for you unless you pay for it.
The fix: pick managed WordPress hosting, or agree to a maintenance plan with your developer.

Reason 3: Is WordPress Good for SEO? A Head Start, Not a Guarantee

WordPress gives you a good base for SEO, but it does not rank your site by itself. It produces clean page structure, lets you edit page titles and web addresses, and works with SEO plugins such as Yoast SEO. Your content, speed and links still decide the results.

What WordPress helps you do:

  • Set a custom title and description for every page.
  • Create clean, readable URLs.
  • Add structured data and sitemaps through plugins.
  • Publish blog posts regularly with a built-in editor.

What it does not do for you:

  • Write helpful content.
  • Make a slow host fast.
  • Earn links from other sites.

The catch: too many heavy plugins and a bloated theme can slow your pages, and slow pages frustrate visitors.
The fix: use a light theme, install only plugins you need, compress images, and test your pages in Google Search Console and PageSpeed Insights.

Reason 4: Plugins Built for Pakistan: WooCommerce, JazzCash and Urdu

Plugins are like apps for your website. This is where WordPress becomes useful for local business.

  • Online store: WooCommerce turns a WordPress site into a shop.
  • Local payments: a paid JazzCash gateway for WooCommerce exists that takes mobile-wallet and card payments at checkout, and it is translation-ready, so checkout can run in Urdu or English. Check whether your payment provider offers its own plugin for Easypaisa or bank cards before you build; I haven’t confirmed a specific maintained one.
  • Urdu and bilingual content: a translation plugin such as WPML lets you run English and Urdu versions side by side. Confirm right-to-left display in your chosen theme before you commit.
  • Contact and booking: forms, appointment bookings and WhatsApp chat buttons are all plugin territory.

The catch: third-party gateways need merchant credentials and ongoing updates, and a gateway that stops being maintained can break your checkout.
The fix: use plugins with recent updates and active support, and test a real payment before launch.

Reason 5: Easy to Manage Without Coding

You don’t need to know code to run a WordPress site. The built-in block editor works much like a word processor: you type, add images, and arrange sections.

Everyday tasks take minutes:

  • Log in to your dashboard.
  • Open a page or create a new post.
  • Edit text and images.
  • Click Update.

If you want drag-and-drop layouts, page builders like Elementor add that on top. They are optional.

The catch: the dashboard has a learning curve for the first week, and your first setup is easier with some help.
The fix: ask your developer for a short training session and a one-page guide to your site.

Reason 6: A Huge Ecosystem That Grows With You

WordPress runs personal blogs and large business sites. That means you can start with five pages and add a shop, a booking system or a course later, without switching platforms.

A large ecosystem also means:

  • Many developers know WordPress, so you are not tied to one freelancer.
  • Many tutorials, so common problems have a documented answer.
  • Many themes and plugins, so you rarely build from scratch.

The catch: a bigger ecosystem means more variation in quality.
The fix: hire someone who can show you earlier WordPress projects, and ask which plugins they plan to use and why.

The Catch: Is WordPress Secure in 2026?

Here is what most guides skip.

WordPress core, the main software, is rarely the problem. Plugins are. Patchstack’s 2026 report found 11,334 new vulnerabilities in the WordPress ecosystem in 2025, up 42% from 7,966 in 2024. Of those, 91% were in plugins and 9% in themes. WordPress core had only six, all low priority. The report also found 46% had no patch available at the time they were disclosed.

What this means for you: WordPress is a safe base, but a careless plugin choice can open the door.

Five rules that cut most of the risk:

  • Install only plugins you truly need.
  • Choose plugins that are updated regularly.
  • Update WordPress, themes and plugins promptly.
  • Use strong passwords and turn on two-step login.
  • Keep automatic off-site backups.

Is WordPress Still Worth Using in the AI Era?

Yes, for most business sites, but it isn’t the only sensible option anymore. AI website builders can produce a site in minutes. Commentators describe them as faster and often cheaper upfront, while WordPress keeps the edge on long-term control and scale.

WordPress is also adding AI tools of its own. According to one 2026 roundup, WordPress 7.0 shipped on 20 May 2026 with a built-in AI Client. Confirm the details on wordpress.org before relying on that.

A simple way to think about it: AI builders are a fast start, and WordPress is a platform you can keep building on.

  • You want a site live this weekend with zero learning curve.
  • You will sell products only and want everything handled in one place (Shopify).
  • You won’t maintain a site and won’t pay anyone to do it.

The WP Fit Score: Your 6-Question Self-Test

Answer yes or no. Each “yes” scores 1 point.

  • Do you want to own your site and be free to move hosts?
  • Will you publish content regularly, such as blogs or updates?
  • Might you add features later, like a shop, bookings or a second language?
  • Can you pay for decent hosting, or a maintenance plan, each year?
  • Do you want to rank on Google over the long term?
  • Are you willing to learn the dashboard, or pay for a short training?
  • 5–6: WordPress is a strong fit.
  • 3–4: It can work, but plan for a developer or a managed host.
  • 0–2: Look at a hosted builder first.

How to Start Your WordPress Website in 5 Steps

  • Pick a domain name. Short, easy to spell, and ideally a .com.
  • Buy hosting. Choose a provider with good support and daily backups.
  • Install WordPress. Most hosts offer one-click install.
  • Choose a light theme and install only essential plugins. An SEO plugin and a backup plugin come first.
  • Build your core pages, then test. Check mobile display, speed and your contact or payment forms before you launch.

FAQs

Is WordPress free?

The WordPress software is free to download and use. You still pay for a domain and hosting, and you may pay for premium themes, plugins or a developer.

Is WordPress good for SEO?

It gives you a solid base: clean structure, editable titles and URLs, and SEO plugins. It can’t rank a site by itself, because content quality, speed and links matter as well.

Is WordPress secure?

WordPress core is rarely the weak point. Most reported vulnerabilities are in plugins, so keep everything updated, use fewer plugins, and back up your site.

Should I use WordPress.org or WordPress.com?

For a business site, most people choose WordPress.org because it gives full control. WordPress.com is simpler but more limited.

Do I need coding skills to use WordPress?

No. The editor works like a word processor, and most hosts offer one-click install. Coding helps only for custom features.
